Health psychologists specialise in the psychology of health, wellbeing and illness. We are interested in how people think, feel and act when it comes to their health, and are committed to using our skills and knowledge to support people’s health and wellbeing.
Different health psychologists will specialise in different aspects of health. My main focus is working with people to protect and promote their health and wellbeing, by helping people with behaviours that can support health like eating well and exercising. Some health psychologists support people to manage the impact of living with long-term health conditions. Other health psychologists work to improve the healthcare system, for example by providing training to healthcare professionals on better ways to communicate with patients.
As health psychologists, although we focus more on physical health and wellbeing, we’re really interested in how physical and mental health interact. For example, we explore the ways that our physical health impacts our mental health or how people cope living with health conditions, symptoms and side effects. We also consider the ways our mental health can impact on our physical health either more directly or indirectly via changing behaviours.
So I like to envisage health psychology as a sort of bridge between physical and mental health. We're not medically trained like physical health specialists and we don't diagnose conditions or prescribe medications. We also don't (generally) delve into the direct treatment of mental health issues in the way that clinical psychologists, or other therapists or counsellors do. We sit somewhere in between and consider the broad picture, using psychology to understand and improve people's health and wellbeing, and healthcare systems.

The Getting to Know You session, exactly as the name suggests, is for me to get to know more about you, and for you to get to know more about the service. I will ask some questions about what it is you want to accomplish, why that is, what makes it harder to achieve, as well as information about your personal circumstances. There are also some optional questionnaires, so we have a record of where you are starting from that we can look back on further down the line. This will also help me to understand and ensure I am providing a quality service to my clients. I will tell you more about me and the service, and you can ask any questions you may have.
Each session will be individually tailored to suit the goals and preferences of each person. Early sessions will be more focused on your goals and what, if anything, is halting you from achieving them. As we progress, the sessions will focus on how you are progressing, what’s going well, and if anything’s going less well, why and how can we change that.
The free consultation will be around 20 minutes. You tell me what your interests/goals are and I will tell you more about the service and how it could help you. I can also answer any questions you may have. The idea is for you to learn more about the service before you decide to book, check it's right for you, and to get to know me a little.
This is very individual. It will vary depending on what your goals are, the level of support you’re looking for, and over what kind of time period. After the Getting to Know You session you might choose to see how it goes. Or you can set an upper limit and I will be open about what be achieved within that.
This is flexible. I suggest once per week to begin with and getting less frequent over time. But we can discuss this, and sessions can be spaced out to suit you.
The Getting to Know You session is an essential start for both you and me. It allows me to learn more about you, assess your starting point, what you want to achieve and understand some of your likes and dislikes. It also means you can get to know me a little more before we start getting into a bit more detail, and hopefully I can make you begin to feel comfortable talking to me.
Yes. Although there may be some exceptional circumstances in which I may not be able to keep to this. This is if I believe you or someone else may be at risk of harm, or if I become aware of any illegal activity. Wherever I can, I would discuss this with you before taking action. This will be explained before you begin.
No, unfortunately not. Clients must be 18 years or older.
